Materials required for installing a ganivelle

Chestnut wood posts

The post length should be about 40 cm longer than the height of the ganivelle, to ensure they are firmly anchored in the ground. Their diameter should be 8 to 10 cm.

Mallet or post driver

A rubber-headed mallet is recommended to avoid damaging the top of the post.

Auger

The auger can be motorized. The drill bit diameter should not exceed the thickness of the posts.

Galvanized wire / tensioners / stainless steel staples

Tension wires are recommended to properly stretch the ganivelle.

Sirit level

Les fils tendeurs sont conseillés pour bien étirer la ganivelle.

String line and measuring tape

Used to mark out the area to be fenced.

Wire cutters, pliers, hammer, adjustable wrench...

Essential tools for proper wire installation.

Ground preparation

Objective: To mark out and prepare the area to be fenced, ensuring good alignment and a solid fixing.

Marking out

  • Drive a post at each end of the area to be fenced.
  • Stretch a string line between these two posts to create a straight line.
  • Add temporary intermediate posts if necessary for a long layout.

Ground preparation

  • Clear the line of stones, roots and weeds.
  • If the ground is uneven, level it to make installation easier.

Installing the posts

Objective: To firmly drive the posts into the ground to ensure the stability of the ganivelle.

Spacing and driving

  • Measure the spacing between posts: generally 1.5 to 2.5 meters, depending on the desired rigidity.
  • Use an auger to dig holes approximately one third the length of the post (e.g. 50 cm deep for a 1.5 m post).
  • Drive the chestnut wood posts into the ground using a mallet or post driver.
  • Check alignment with the string line and verticality with a spirit level.

Fixing the corner posts

  • Drive corner posts deeper and, if possible, reinforce them with struts.

Attaching the ganivelle

Objective: to securely attach the ganivelle to the posts for a strong and attractive result

Unrolling and positioning

  • Unroll the chestnut ganivelle along the posts, with the pointed ends facing upward.
  • Position it at the desired height, leaving a 5 to 10 cm gap at the bottom to prevent direct contact with the soil (protection against moisture).

Fixing with wire or staples

  • Attach the ganivelle to each post using galvanized wire (or stainless steel staples) every 20–30 cm.
  • Enroulez le fil de fer autour des piquets puis torsadez-le solidement à l’arrière.
Wrap the wire around the posts, then twist it firmly at the back.
  • Use wire cutters to trim any excess.
  • Gradually tension the ganivelle to avoid waviness.

Finishing and inspection

Objective: to complete the installation and ensure the strength and aesthetic quality of the fence.

Checking tension and alignment

  • Make sure the ganivelle is properly tensioned and that the posts are straight.
  • Adjust the fixings if necessary.

Maintenance

  • Inspect the ganivelle regularly and retighten the wires if needed.
