Materials required for installing a ganivelle
Ground preparation
Objective: To mark out and prepare the area to be fenced, ensuring good alignment and a solid fixing.
Marking out
- Drive a post at each end of the area to be fenced.
- Stretch a string line between these two posts to create a straight line.
- Add temporary intermediate posts if necessary for a long layout.
Ground preparation
- Clear the line of stones, roots and weeds.
- If the ground is uneven, level it to make installation easier.
Installing the posts
Objective: To firmly drive the posts into the ground to ensure the stability of the ganivelle.
Spacing and driving
- Measure the spacing between posts: generally 1.5 to 2.5 meters, depending on the desired rigidity.
- Use an auger to dig holes approximately one third the length of the post (e.g. 50 cm deep for a 1.5 m post).
- Drive the chestnut wood posts into the ground using a mallet or post driver.
- Check alignment with the string line and verticality with a spirit level.
Fixing the corner posts
- Drive corner posts deeper and, if possible, reinforce them with struts.
Attaching the ganivelle
Objective: to securely attach the ganivelle to the posts for a strong and attractive result
Unrolling and positioning
- Unroll the chestnut ganivelle along the posts, with the pointed ends facing upward.
- Position it at the desired height, leaving a 5 to 10 cm gap at the bottom to prevent direct contact with the soil (protection against moisture).
Fixing with wire or staples
- Attach the ganivelle to each post using galvanized wire (or stainless steel staples) every 20–30 cm.
- Enroulez le fil de fer autour des piquets puis torsadez-le solidement à l’arrière.
Wrap the wire around the posts, then twist it firmly at the back. - Use wire cutters to trim any excess.
- Gradually tension the ganivelle to avoid waviness.
Finishing and inspection
Objective: to complete the installation and ensure the strength and aesthetic quality of the fence.
