What is a wattle fence?

Wattle fences (also known as ‘barrière girondine’ and chestnut pailing) have long been used in rural settings. They are constructed from split chestnut laths (called ‘échalas’), arranged vertically and pointed on one side, spaced to determine the fence’s permeability, then assembled with a double twisted galvanized steel wire.

Traditionally, these are made from split chestnut, which ensures better durability than sawn slats. Due to their design, they adapt well to slopes and terrain that may be uneven.

Why Chestnut?

Naturally rot-resistant due to its high tannin content, chestnut effectively withstands weather, insects and fungi without requiring chemical treatment.

Unlike pine or some exotic species, chestnut retains its mechanical properties for several decades, making it a sustainable, ecological alternative. Our wood is harvested on average within 20 km of our facility.

Why choose a wattle fence?

To protect coastal dunes

Installing a wattle fence as a windbreak on dunes significantly reduces wind speed and thus the transport of sand, leaves, etc.
This gives it remarkable effectiveness in combating aeolian deflation, and for ecological restoration or physical protection of coastal dunes.

To delineate outdoor spaces

The wattle fence can be used to form enclosures, guide domestic animals, or direct people (around ponds, ditches, or sensitive natural zones).

The wattle fence may also serve as a snow barrier.

To create privacy zones

If you are looking for an elegant solution to preserve privacy without detracting from your garden’s aesthetic, the ganivelle is an excellent choice.

Its natural design creates a subtle screen that shields from external views while allowing light and air to pass.

For Enhancing Landscape Projects

Ganivelles harmonize perfectly with many garden styles and landscape designs. Whether you want a rustic décor with shrubs and wildflowers or a more modern feel by pairing with stone or steel, chestnut ganivelles adapt to all inspirations.

They can also support certain plantings—flowering hedges or climbers—by serving as natural trellises.

Which wattle fence to choose?

You have two types of wattle fences to choose from: split laths or flat sawn boards. Each has its own advantages.

Split Échalas

  • Aesthetic and natural integration
  • Durability
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Easy installation

Flat Sawn Slats

  • Uniformity and aesthetics
  • Ease of customisation
  • Practical installation
  • Lower risk of splinters

Cuts are made to order, with custom options for height and spacing between laths.
